Snubbed Niasse backing Senegal all the way at the World Cup
Senegal international Oumar Niasse wants the Teranga Lions to show their worth at the World Cup in Russia.
Aliou Cisse’s outfit are back at the global stage for the first time since an impressive debut at Korea/Japan 2002. In Russia, Senegal will play in Group H, which also contains Poland, Japan and Colombia.
“It is a great opportunity for our country to show to the world what a good team we have,” Everton striker Niasse, who was one of the major casualties of Cisse’s final 23-man squad, told his club’s official website.
“I am very proud to come from Senegal and am looking forward to the World Cup.
“We will see how we will do. We have a strong team.
“We will not go there as tourists – we will fight until the end. We will try our best.”
For the Teranga Lions to do well, a lot will be expected of Niasse’s club team-mate Idrissa Gana Gueye, who is a regular face in Senegal’s set-up.
“He [Gueye] has shown for Everton what an important player he is but he is also very important for our country,” Niasse added.
“You can see his qualities – how he tackles, breaks up play, stops opponents – and that is so important to any team.
“I think Gana will show it at the World Cup. Senegal have got many good players and he is definitely one of the best.
“Yes, he’s my friend but he’s also a very good footballer and I’m looking forward to seeing him do very well in Russia.”
Senegal will open their campaign against Poland on Tuesday.
