Mbappe avoids serious injury after painful goalkeeper collision
Kylian Mbappe was taken off in the first half of Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 loss to Lyon on Sunday after a nasty collision with goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, although his club later confirmed he avoided serious injury.
PSG forward had to exit in the first half of the Ligue 1 contest after being wiped out by the Lyon goalkeeper.
The French striker was reaching for a bouncing through ball from Marco Verratti when Lopes came charging out, getting a hand to the ball before wiping out Mbappe in a full-body collision.
Mbappe remained on the field for several minutes before leaving on a stretcher, with Julian Draxler coming on in the 36th minute.
That incident came just five minutes after Mbappe was involved in another scary sequence, as the 19-year-old was left bleeding following a clash of heads with Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.
PSG manager Unai Emery was already without Brazilian star Neymar, who missed the trip to Lyon with a thigh injury.
The sides entered half-time level at 1-1, as a second-minute strike from Nabil Fekir was negated by Layvin Kurzawa’s screamer just before the break.
But PSG suffered another setback early in the second half, with Dani Alves sent off in the 57th minute for screaming in the referee’s face after he was whistled for a clumsy challenge near midfield.
“There is nothing serious,” club doctor Eric Rolland told Canal+ at half-time, the medic adding that Mbappe did not need to be taken to hospital for treatment.
Reduced to 10 men, PSG nearly escaped with a point before falling victim to a spectacular Memphis Depay winner deep into second-half stoppage time.
The win saw second-placed Lyon climb within eight points of Ligue 1 leaders PSG through 22 matches.
PSG now face a likely spell on the sidelines for Mbappe, who has scored 15 goals over 26 matches in all competitions this season since arriving on loan from Monaco this past summer.
